Technology induces change into politics

Money and votes are always correlated to each other during elections. Its seen that, wealthier the candidate is, the higher the chances of him/her winning. This is because a rich leader, spends money to buy votes.

Even though, the Election Commission of India (EC) has put a limit on how much a candidate can spend during elections, most of the candidates spend more than the limit. To monitor this the EC has made a law for candidates to open a separate bank account to manage election expenses. At present, a parliamentary candidate can spend up to ₹ 54 lakhs in small states and union territories, while the limit for bigger states is ₹ 70 lakhs. The corresponding limits for state assembly seats are ₹ 20 lakhs and ₹ 28 lakhs, respectively. To restrict the movement of unaccounted money or black money, the commission keeps a strict vigil on every candidate during elections.

The traditional form of campaigning is slowly depleting and parties are using digital mediums to run campaigns. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Whatsapp are most commonly used to run campaigns. As India is transforming itself into “Digital India”, social media is providing a platform for politicians to interact, build relationships, share the principles with their followers.

Technology can actually change the way politics works. While, Electoral Voting Machines helps to conduct fair and free elections, social media is helping politicians to maintain healthy relationships with their followers. Technology helps to keep all the political activities transparent.

Technology can help people to monitor their leaders. The nominated leaders are under the micro surveillance as technologies like news, social media etc., allows people to watch leaders closely. For example, with technology, a leader’s promises are recorded, dissected, replayed multiple times. Once some issue hits the web, it gets viral and stays there forever. So, leaders should live under the notion that there will be someone who will always be watching them closely. Hence, technology has helped in constant monitoring of a leader’s behaviour. This has transformed them to be transparent to some extent if not completely.

Providing a very specific platform for politicians can help them to build their political portfolio and even the people can view the works he has done for the society. For example, people can view all the activities that the leader has worked for the area with just a click of a button. By gauging the developments implemented by a particular candidate of an area, the citizens can choose and vote for that particular leader. By this way a suitable and a loyal candidate can be chosen to lead them.

Why not bring the process of voting online? without having people to come out of their houses to vote.

A new technology that can be a revolution in the field of politics is “BlockChain”. The technology uses nodes on its network to verify, process and record all the transactions across the system. Thanks to encryption and decentralization, blockchain’s database of transactions is incorruptible, and each record is easily verifiable. The network cannot be taken down or influenced by a single party. A blockchain-based voting application does not concern itself with the security of its internet connection, because any hacker with access to the terminal will not be able to affect other nodes. Voters can effectively submit their vote without revealing their identity or political preferences to the public. Officials can count votes with absolute certainty, knowing that each ID can be attributed to one vote, no fakes can be created, and that tampering is impossible.

This kind of system infrastructure is extremely useful for voting because a vote is a small piece of high-value data. Blockchain is one of the right technology which will describe the transparency and effectiveness of the election.

Using technology, the decision making of choosing a leader can be changed. As the biggest democratic country in the world, technology can surely help to reduce the money that is spent for a vote.

So, we at Myleaders are using technology to transform politics and help leaders to be transparent, responsible, accessible to people to express their words and actions.

We’re saying, “With technology, money cannot influence votes. It depends on the true ability and fame of the candidate.”

Vote for a better future and not for money.
