Innovative solutions youth can employ to solve Indian Political System

As young citizens of the country what hope can we have in the Indian Political system? What innovative changes can we bring into this?

We understand that there are many pressing issues that our country needs to tackle. Not one of our Higher Education Institutions in India figures in the list of top 200 Institutions in the world. From the past 10 years, we have been seeing on an average more than 15,000 farmers are committing suicide. There are millions of people in this country who do not have adequate 2 square meals a day.

But we as youngsters should understand that all these challenges can be long lasting solutions and these problems can be corrected if our political system is corrected. This is the mother of all problems.

So how we do this?

Politics isn’t just the game of cashing parties and competing interests. The right is to challenge the status quo, to serve the common good, and to leave this nation better than we found it.

Innovation of youths on Politics

There are a lot of innovative solutions where we as youth can take the responsibility to change India’s Political System. Tejasvi Surya, the MP of South Bangalore listed few of these:

  • We want to curb the influence of caste in the electoral scenario. To do this can we cut and resize our constituencies in such a way that no one cast or no one religion becomes the decisive majority.
  • Can we instead of the first past the post system to win the elections bring in 50%+1 vote to win the system. That is in the present voting system, candidate who ever gets the majority of votes among voted wins the elections. But in 50%+1 system, the candidate needs to get more than 50% of the votes (of the people who are eligible to vote) in his constituency to win the elections.
  • Together can we also bring systems like preferential voting which will induce and encourage voters and political parties to appeal to the electorate on broad based issues, rather than sectarian and narrow appeals.
  • Can we think of how to prevent people with criminal antecedents to even enter into the political system? Can we bring in a legislation which bars people who have been charged of committing grievous offenses. 6 months prior to the elections can we bar such people from contesting the elections until the completion of their trials.
  • And then we come into the question of money. Can we talk to the stakeholders who are involved in the political process and can we think state funding of elections will help reduce this problem.
  • Lets think of more effective enforcement measures to curb the menace of freeways during elections?
  • Can we think of institutionalizing mechanisms through which transparent funding for political parties and candidates can be brought about?
  • To address the problem at its root level, can we also think of tackling and pumping out the black money from the country’s system?

If we’re successful in doing this, it is going to have a large impact on the country’s political scenario. Remember the Pareto Principle or 80/20 Principle.

Acting on transforming the Indian Politics is not only going to make this whole politics of return on investment model go away, but more importantly it will encourage people who come from modest backgrounds to be part of this transformation. It’s going to encourage you and me!

It will allow normal people to enter politics and change the political system for the better. By this we can curb the dynastically inherited political system. If we can reduce menace of money in the political system, then there will be a reasonable amount of internal democracy in the party. Today no party can even think of bringing in internal democracy in any party.

We know this can be done, we don’t need any constitutional amendment for many of these suggestions that are listed. Simple amendments with a few corrections here and there will serve the purpose.

But the question is who will do it? The question is will the ones who are presently occupying the seats do this? How can people who are benefiting from this present system go against it and assure a change. The answer is the youth of the country. We have to go forward.

Vote for a person, who in your opinion is better qualified and competent compared to all the other contestants. If you think you have competency, compassion and desire of the Indian Political System, be part of it.

Never be influenced to vote. Always vote your choice.

We need to build a fair and egalitarian system where any citizen can win the elections by being a member of parliament based on the sheer  fact of competency, integrity and capability.

However good our constitution may be or however bad it may be, if the people who are called to work for, are a good lot then the constitution will be good.

You and I should decide to take this step, You and I have to take up a pledge. You and I have to resolve and let us resolve. Hope you will join your hands with us for the future of this country, let us not leave politics as the last priority.

The founding fathers of this country gave all of us a sublime constitution, lets make it even better.
