Voter ID or Election Card or EPIC - How to register online and offline

Voter ID is a photo identity document issued by the Electoral Commision of India to all the citizens of India who have attained the age of 18 years. Voter ID is also called as EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card). It serves as a proof of identity while casting vote during the country’s municipal, state and national elections. The Voter ID even serves as a proof of identification, address proof and age proof.

Voter ID was introduced first in 1993 by then Chief Election Commissioner TN Seshan.

How does a Voter ID look?

The Voter ID consists of the following details:

On the Front:

  1. Voter ID number or the EPIC Number : It is a unique serial number given to every individual.
  2. Photo of the card holder
  3. Name of the card holder
  4. Fathers name of the card holder
  5. Date of Birth of the card holder
  6. Hologram of the National Symbol

On the Back:

  1. Address of the card holder
  2. Constituency Name and Number to which he/she belongs
  3. Date when the electoral card was issued
  4. Signature of the election commissioner

Documents required to apply for Voters ID:

  1. Proof of Identity: Bank Passbook
  2. Proof of Nationality: Birth Certificate
  3. Age Proof: 10th Standard Marks Card
  4. Address Proof: Ration Card or Rent Agreement
  5. Photograph
  6. Form 6

Differents way to apply for Voters ID:

1. Online:

Visit the website by National Voter’s Service Portal (NSVP – https://www.nvsp.in/) and select Registration for new elector. Fill the Form 6 form and then upload all the supporting document and photograph. 

2. Semi-Online

Visit the website by National Voter’s Service Portal (NSVP – https://www.nvsp.in/) and select Registration for new elector. Download the Form 6 form or collect the Form 6 form from Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Booth Level Officer (BLO). Fill the form and submit all the supporting document along with the photograph and submit it to ERO or BLO or submit it through post.

3. Offline:

Collect the Form 6 form from Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Booth Level Officer (BLO). Fill the form and submit all the supporting document along with the photograph and submit it to ERO or BLO or submit it through post.

After necessary verification from the Booth Level Officer the Voter ID or EPIC is delivered you through post or you can visit the nearest election office.

Who is not eligible to get Voters ID?

  1. One who is not a citizen of India
  2. One who is below the age of 18
  3. One who is suffering from unsound mind
  4. One who is disqualified from voting due to specified corrupt practices or offenses related to election.

Voters ID can not only be used for casting vote but can be used a valid proof of address, age proof and a proof as a citizen of India (i.e, a proof of identity).
